The Squirrel-Nut Issue 4

Welcome to the Spring Edition of The Squirrel-Nut.

After such an appalling summer last year and the cold start to this year, it has been lovely to see butterflies flying in the May sunshine! Fifteen species seen so far this year, with this lovely Orange Tip photographed in the field behind our house!

Oxfordshire's Best Churches scatter proof

We laid out all 340 photographs from Oxfordshire's Best Churches to print on six large sheets 990 x 710 mm to check how the images would look with our printer. This is a picture of just one of these. It looked so good, we thought it would make a great poster!

High Praise for Oxfordshire's Best Churches!

We are thrilled and very proud to report fantastic endorsements for our forthcoming Oxfordshire's Best Churches from two major names in the world of church art and architecture.

Oxfordshire's Best Churches

Sir Simon Jenkins, historian, journalist, Chairman of the National Trust and author of England's Thousand Best Churches, previewed the book and wrote: 'The churches of Oxfordshire are a vignette of the nation. From Chilterns to Cotswolds, Thames valley to Midlands plain, they display the art of the middle ages in all its glory, brought gloriously to life in Wheeler's masterful survey.'

Matthew Saunders, Secretary of the Ancient Monuments Society and Director of the Friends of Friendless Churches, wrote the foreword to the book, concluding with: '...the most enticing of all combinations is authoritative, individual text interlaced with photography that saturates you in the colour and atmosphere of the given church. That is the Wheeler Way. ...Richard Wheeler does for one county what Jenkins does for a nation. Everybody who loves Oxfordshire is in his debt.' Read the foreword

Oxfordshire's Best Churches jacket
Oxfordshire's Best Churches brings together 116 of the county's churches, exploring their art and architecture, stonework and woodwork, stained glass and wall paintings; the conspicuous features for which they are famed and the often-missed details that make them sing. A wide-ranging introduction identifies their sources and describes their evolution, while at the core of the guide is a gazetteer, richly illustrated with 340 colour photographs and numerous plans - making this the ideal companion for those wanting to explore the churches of Oxfordshire.

Finding Inspiration for the Frog Band Books

Jim Smith, author and illustrator of the Frog Band books, drew inspiration for his stories from his life and experiences.

In Alphonse and the Stonehenge Mystery Alphonse borrows a two-seater plane to chase down the airship of the dastardly Pink Baron. This appears to be a De Havilland (DE H-4) 'Battle and Mail' plane from 1919 (as illustrated).

In another illustration, Jim gives the plane WW1 wooden rough terrain landing gear - unfortunately these later prove insufficient to guarantee a smooth landing!
