The Squirrel-Nut Issue 7, Mar 2015

Welcome to the Spring 2015 Edition of The Squirrel-Nut.

Autumn leaves

Our walks over the winter have been enlivened by funghi hunts. We spotted this Turkeytail fungus (Trametes Versicolor) in the old railway cutting near Hook Norton.

Please feel free to forward The Squirrel-Nut to anyone you know who might be interested.

Mapping a church

North Leigh St Mary plan

As highlighted in some of the reviews for Oxfordshire's Best Churches, the book contains a number of scale plans done for us by Mike Salter, himself a writer and publisher of books on churches (and more besides).

Dated, scale drawings are a particularly useful way of encapsulating the story of a church's development - and are invaluable when the story is a complex one, as at North Leigh (shown here).

Oxfordshire's Best Churches features fifteen of Mike's superb plans.

Inspiration for the Frog Band Books

Airship in 'Alphonse and the Stonehenge Mystery'

In our regular slot on Jim Smith's inspiration for the Frog Band books, we've been having a closer look at the airship in Alphonse and the Stonehenge Mystery.

According to the Editor of Dirigible Magazine, Wolfgang the Pink Baron's airship is based on the forward engine car of the British Royal Naval Air Service rigid airship R34 used in the First World War.

The R34 was a British copy of a German Zeppelin raider that was shot down near London in the First World War, and she is famous for flying to New York and back in 1919. This picture of the R34 is from the Airship Heritage Trust website.
