New Look Alphonse!

Alphonse and the Stonehenge Mystery new cover

Earlier this year we sold out of the ever-popular Alphonse and the Stonehenge Mystery, so took the opportunity to refresh the cover design when we reprinted. Stonehenge itself now appears on the front of the book (being peered at by Alphonse through his telescope) while on the back the ace detective circles overhead in a biplane.

Small but Perfectly Formed

Miniature baptismal font in North Oxfordshire

Inside the font a smaller font, hand-carved in limestone, probably sometime in the nineteenth century. But who made it and why? The ‘who’ is impossible to answer (the font is unmarked). As to the ‘why’, the use of a smaller vessel within the main font avoided the need to fill the latter with water for baptism. It also meant the service could take place elsewhere in the church – for instance on a table at the steps to the chancel.

Miniature Baptismal Fonts
Julian Wheeler, Foreword by Henry Sandon MBE
Miniature Baptismal Fonts cover

For centuries, miniature fonts have enabled baptism to occur anywhere in the church, and even beyond its walls.

Their range is startling, from simple dish-like vessels to scale replicas of celebrated fonts; ‘pocket’ fonts in fitted boxes for bedside baptisms to large and expensive portable fonts for private chapels and royalty; made from pottery, stone, metals and even wood. The heyday of the miniature font was the nineteenth century, with numerous examples manufactured by the likes of Minton, Spode, Wedgwood and Worcester.

Richly illustrated with more than 100 colour images, this is the first book to explore the fascinating and little known subject of miniature baptismal fonts.

Paperback, £8.99
234 x 156 mm, 56 pages, 101 colour illustrations

Telegraph masthead

'Funny fonts that are smaller than the baby'

This was the title of Christopher Howse's Sacred Mysteries column in the Daily Telegraph on Saturday 3 December featuring our new title Miniature Baptismal Fonts.

Miniature Baptismal Fonts page spread

Howse admits that 'This world of miniature fonts is entirely new to me', going on to say 'I was fascinated by a little book, published by the enterprising Fircone Books, called Miniature Baptismal Fonts (£8.99), out just in time for Christmas.'
